The
stuff that you find on this site is relevant to my local area within the Borough
of Epsom & Ewell, in the United Kingdom. This lovely Borough is located in the
north of the county of Surrey, squeezed in under the bulging metropolis of
London and within the strangle hold of it's infamous M25 orbital motorway.
The bulk of my website is made up of local
history topics; things that interest me, and judging from hits that have been
recorded there are a number of similar minded people who have found something of
interest here and a number of people have emailed me comments and questions.
None of the various branches of the site
are finished, in fact they never could be as historical research always throws
up something new, or a different perspective on old information develops.
Photographic Credits: Unless otherwise marked, the photographs
on this site are from my own collection of photos copied from various local
residents; or by kind permission of Bourne Hall Museum.

A Message from Rachel Phillips April 2009
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my husband
Derek Phillips from cancer on the 10th December 2008 aged 43. During
Derek’s illness, of approximately two years, he showed great fortitude and
faith and never lost his interest in the local community through his
responsibilities as an Epsom and Ewell Borough Councillor and updating
this local history website. In particular I believe Derek left us with a
very special legacy with his last addition to this website of a short
video he produced in the autumn. (see below).
On the day before Derek died he handed me a memory stick and said ‘that’s
got my testimony on it’. I presumed he wanted me to do something with it!
I knew that he had wanted to write something about his life and faith for
this website but was struggling as to how best to do this. This link takes
you to what Derek wrote unedited, although please bear in mind that I
don’t think he had quite finished it.
In memory of Derek’s contribution to the community, the Council organised
a tree to be planted and a rustic bench to be erected along the River
Hogsmill. The unedited press release sent to the local paper is included
here together with a photograph.
In the coming months the material on this site will be incorporated into
the www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk website.
Derek’s DVD of the River Hogsmill is still available from the Bourne Hall
Museum Shop priced £9.00. If you are not local you can order a copy from
me by e-mail from racheljphillips at tiscali.co.uk (NB substitute ‘at’
with ‘@’ and delete all spaces) Priced £10 (to include postage and
packing).

| I had loads of footage shot 4 years ago in various seasons
in Nonsuch Park, Ewell which I had intended to use in some sort of "through
the seasons" production. This project never came about but I thought I'd
make a short video to show at my
Church's Harvest
Supper. (September 08) I listed 2 pages of phrases from the Psalms to use as
text overlaying the images, such as "the heavens declare the glory of God"
over a sunset. However Rachel had the idea of playing "Crimond" on the piano
which led me to using the 23rd Psalm - and I found a recording of "King of
Kings, Majesty" made at one of our Church services. Both seemed to fit with
the images. So this is the finished result. |
